One hundred popular musicians have been named the Greatest Artists of All Time by Billboard—and yet, “great” looks different from artist to artist depending on their chart history, career longevity, and success in the streaming age.
Do all the greats have decades-long careers? Do they have to keep charting on the Hot 100 to prove their success? Or does the democratic model of internet streaming services change who’s considered a popular musician?
We wanted to find out, so we compiled Billboard data on popular musicians and songs through the ages, then sliced and diced the data with streaming metrics. Check out what we found about the lengthy careers—and current popularity—of some of the most successful artists of all time.
Methodology
To examine the longevity of popular musicians, we started with Billboard’s top 10 Greatest of All Time Artists and found out how many of their songs charted on the Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Songs. Billboard uses sales figures, radio airplay, and streaming data to compile these charts.
Next, we tracked (1) how often songs by these top 10 artists appeared on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 between June 1962 and June 2022 and (2) the positions each song attained. We then averaged the number of weeks each song charted and the positions they achieved on the Hot 100.
Lastly, to get a better idea of popularity in the digital age, we isolated streaming metrics to see how each artist’s Spotify and YouTube subscribers compare to their Billboard rankings over the last 60 years.
We gathered the data for this report in June 2022.
Longevity and current success of Billboard top 10 artists
Interesting findings
- Elton John is the longest-charting artist on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Artists list, with approximately 50 years charting on the Billboard Hot 100.
- John’s first charting song, “Rocket Man” (1972), peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, he’s released 31 albums and sold over 300 million records worldwide.
- Elton John still dominates the charts in 2022. His song with Dua Lipa, “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” has spent 39 weeks on the Hot 100 with a peak ranking at #7.
- Four of the top 10 Billboard Greatest of All Time Artists made their Billboard Hot 100 debuts in 1964: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Barbra Streisand, and Stevie Wonder.
- Of this group, Stevie Wonder has the longest tenure on the Billboard Hot 100, with his songs charting about 24 years.
- Only five of the top 10 Billboard artists charted on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Songs: the Beatles, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder.
- The Beatles hold the highest ranking song on the Greatest of All Time Hot 100 with “Hey Jude” at #13.
- The most recent Greatest Hot 100 song, Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” (2005), ranks at #15.
- Even though the Beatles rank #1 on the Billboard Greatest of All Time Artists, they spent the fewest years with hit songs on the weekly Billboard Hot 100, spanning only about 12 years on the chart.
- According to Spotify, the band recorded together for just over seven years and released 13 albums together.
- The youngest artist to make the 10 Greatest All Time Artists, Taylor Swift, exceeded the Beatles’ time on the weekly Hot 100 charts. She’s been charting hit songs on the Hot 100 for 14 years already.
- Taylor Swift, whose career launched more recently than any other top 10 Billboard artist, dominates the digital space. She has more YouTube subscribers and Spotify monthly listeners than any other top 10 Billboard artist.
- Swift’s most-watched music video on YouTube, “Shake It Off,” has 3.2 billion views.
- “Shake It Off” earned a spot in the 20 most-watched YouTube videos of all time—the only song by a top 10 Billboard artist to earn the honor.
- Even though Swift removed her music from Spotify between 2014 and 2017, that didn’t stop her from becoming the #7 most streamed artist of all time on Spotify, according to Chartmasters.
- Madonna and Stevie Wonder tied for chart longevity. Both spent about 24 years on the weekly Billboard Hot 100.
- After years of licensing negotiations, the Beatles’ music finally published on streaming services in 2015. Since then, fans have streamed their music enough to make the Beatles the #4 Billboard Greatest Artist with the most Spotify monthly listeners.
- Mariah Carey is the best-selling female artist of all time, with more than 200 million albums sold to date. Her songs have ranked higher on the weekly Hot 100 than any other songs by top 10 Billboard artists, with an average peak ranking at #9.

Gen Xers and Millennials who spent time gaming as children may remember being told it was a waste of time.
Today, there’s a growing consensus that time spent playing video games can build skills such as literacy, problem solving, and socializing. And, studies or not, Americans’ real-life habits suggest that gaming has become one of life’s irresistible pleasures—even among the Boomers who once questioned its value.
How do we know? We asked. Check out our survey results below for more insights into one of America’s newer national pastimes. P.S. For a highly responsive, high-def experience while gaming, choose fiber-optic internet service with low lag. Check fiber internet availability now.
Gaming habits in Americans ages 16 to 54+
Survey conducted in April 2022
Interesting findings
- 68% of Americans play video games regularly, as opposed to “sometimes” or “never.”
- Gen Z clocks the highest percentage of regular gamers (73%).
- Boomers were split 50-50 between playing regularly or just “sometimes.”
- The largest share of Americans (46%) spend no more than 1–3 hours gaming in a row, a trend consistent across respondents of all ages.
- Only 4% of Americans regularly play game marathons that run 13 or more hours.
- The largest share of respondents (30%) play 8–12 hours of video games per week.
- The largest share of Gen X gamers were split evenly between 8–12 hours and 1–3 hours per week (26% each).
- Boomers most commonly spend just 1–3 hours gaming each week (31%).
- During the second year of social distancing in 2021, Americans’ weekly time spent gaming with others increased from 6.6 hours in 2020 to 7.5 hours, according to Statista.
- Most people across generations (33%) play video games primarily for the mental stimulation. Gen Z is a notable exception, with the largest share (31%) saying they play because they’re “obsessed”—it’s one of their favorite pastimes.
- Despite PlayStation 2 being the top-selling video game console of all time, according to Statista, it ranked behind mobile gaming in our survey.
- Americans spend more time gaming on mobile devices than on any other console. The majority of people who play mobile games (57%) like knowing they can entertain themselves anywhere.
- Respondents spend more time playing Call of Duty: Mobile than other popular mobile games. Roblox and Minecraft tie for second.
- Boomers are the only generation in which the majority doesn’t play open-world games (76%).
- Of the 24% that do, they spend the most time on either Fallout or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (tied at 19% each).
- Fallout is the shortest open-world game to beat on our list at just 22 hours, while Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes 91.5 hours.
- At 120 hours, Skyrim takes more time to beat than any open-world game on our list, according to How Long To Beat—and just 8% of our survey respondents spend the most time playing it.
- Gen Z and Millennials are the most likely generations to play to win, constantly trying to beat records and come out on top.
- 37% of Gen Xers enjoy some competition, but it’s not the biggest reason they game.
- 42% of Boomers play non-competitive games and like to go at their own pace.
- Gen Z is the only generation that spends more time playing first-person shooter games than other genres (29%).
- The remaining generations spend the most time playing action/adventure games, although Millennials are split between action/adventure and open-world games (18% each).
- 29% of respondents spend more time playing Grand Theft Auto than any other open-world game. Gen X plays it the most out of any generation (39%), narrowly beating Gen Z (38%).
Methodology
First, we used leading market research software Pollfish to survey 1,000 Americans ages 16–54+ on their gaming habits. We then divided the results by the following generations: Gen Z (16–24 years old), Millennials (25–44 years old), Gen X (45–54 years old), and Boomers (54+ years old).
We also compared How Long To Beat’s average completion time for six leading open-world games against the relative game time reported by our survey respondents. We collected our data in April 2022.

You might be surprised how lavish the budget gets for TV show outfits. Glance at WornOnTV.net, the most extensive database of outfits worn on TV, and you’ll see the numbers add up fast.
Can’t afford the iconic “lewks” of your favorite TV stars? (Hello, inflation!) Don’t feel bad—most of the characters couldn’t afford their TV show outfits in the real world either. We know. We ran the numbers.
But you can still rock outfits inspired by TV shows. Just take notes while you watch TV, then use search engines or apps to adapt the luxe versions into beautiful and affordable outfits for yourself.
Interesting Findings
- Out of all of the characters that we analyzed, only four could afford the iconic outfits from their TV shows:
- Chloe Decker, the LAPD homicide detective whose mortgage-free lifestyle would definitely help her afford Veronica Beard jackets.
- Rory Gilmore, who works as editor of the Stars Hollow Gazette in Gilmore Girls and dresses in the “accessible luxury” brand Maje.
- Matthew Casey, a fire captain in Chicago Fire who sports classic plaid tops from Rails.
- Sylvie Brett, a paramedic in Chicago Fire whose wardrobe flies under the luxury radar with practical pieces from Madewell.
- Rory Gilmore, who has about $1,000 more disposable income per month than her mother, would have to save for 3 months (and not spend her disposable income on much else!) to afford Lorelai’s Alexander McQueen bag.
- It would take most characters at least 4 months to save up for Emily Cooper’s Libellibotta boots by Christian Louboutin—while again, not spending their disposable income on much else.
- Only Chloe Decker, with a mortgage-free home courtesy of her mother and a monthly disposable income of $2,368, could afford them without having to save.
- Matthew Casey, who has the next highest disposable income, would have to wait at least 2 months to afford them.
- To afford the printed blouse and pink blazer that Amy Sosa wears to interview for the store manager position, she would have to save for a month and a half on her new salary—the one supported by real-life statistics, not the fictional $109,000 salary she makes on the show.
Methodology
First, we compiled a list of popular TV shows, along with major characters and the iconic outfits they wear on TV.
- We compiled a list of 40 popular TV shows featured on wornontv.net, the most definitive source for where to find outfits from TV shows, and then used SEMrush to find the search volume for each show.
- We narrowed our list to 5 shows with the highest search volumes, eliminating shows that rated under 6.9/10 on IMDb.
- We then found the most-watched episode of each show on IMDb and compiled data on the cost of two outfits worn by main characters in that episode.
Next, we pulled the numbers on whether each character could realistically afford their signature outfits as seen on TV.
- We found the salary for each character’s profession using payscale.com and considered tax deductions by state using a salary paycheck calculator from ADP.
- We created a cost-of-living budget for each character consisting of rent, utilities, groceries, gas, entertainment, and public transportation in each state.
- We determined how much disposable income each character has and compared the amounts to the cost of their most iconic TV outfits.
